Top 9 Causes of Car Accidents

car accidents

Car accidents are a leading cause of injury among Florida residents. As we near tourist season, the North Port area can expect to see increasingly busy roads full of tourists; and this increase in traffic typically precedes an increase in accidents.

There are many causes for car accidents, some mechanical and some circumstantial. Here are the top causes according to statistics:

Top 5 Mechanical Causes of Car Accident

Many car accidents could be avoided if cars were properly maintained. To keep your car as safe as possible on the road, be sure to keep these items checked and working well.

  • Brakes: Brake pads which need replacement typically screech or scrape when the brake pedal is depressed. Another sign of needed maintenance is if the brake pedal feels soft, slowly sinks to the floor of the car, or the vehicle pulls to one side or another when brakes are employed.
  • Tires: With normal use, tires should last 5 to 6 years. However, hitting curbs or driving over potholes can weaken the tire, causing it to blow out. Loos or air pressure or worn tread are also signs that your tires need replacing. A worn tire tread cannot grip the road during our Florida rainstorms.
  • Headlights: It is clear why having two functional headlights is necessary to stay safe; night driving and driving through inclement weather is exceptionally hazardous should visibility be compromised. Check both headlights and taillights regularly.
  • Steering Column: Steering wheels may begin to vibrate at higher speeds, or even lock on occasion. Both situations require maintenance. If the car is pulling to one side or the other, it could be either the steering wheel or the tires.
  • Windshield Wipers: If you are noticing large areas that are missed by your wipers, or if their usage causes streaks, it is time to replace the wipers. Bad wipers can significantly affect your visibility.

Top 4 Behavioral Causes of Car Accidents

Car accidents happen more frequently due to the person behind the wheel than mechanical issues. Here are the top causes of driver error which cause car accident injury.

  • Distracted Driving: The proliferation of smartphones caused this category to rise significantly, mostly due to texting and driving. However, talking on the phone, eating or drinking, or changing the radio station can also be causes of a distracted driving accident.
  • Drunk Driving: Laws and societal pressures and awareness have lowered the incidents of drunk driving considerably, but it is still a major cause of car accidents in South Florida.
  • Speeding: Speeding is especially dangerous on wet and crowded roads, and we have plenty of both. Without enough reaction time, speeding can cause serious accidents and significant injury.
  • Running Red Lights and Stop Signs: Running through these signals is clearly dangerous, as cars traveling in cross traffic are not expecting you to barrel into the intersection. Reckless driving in this manner is the cause of many car accidents, especially when paired with distracted driving.

Regardless of the reason for the car accident, the impact can often cause serious trauma to the body. Whether whiplash or other related neck and back pain, be sure to call West Coast Wellness after your car accident. Do You Have Whiplash? Here’s How To Know

Car accidents are a common occurrence, and nearly everyone has been in some form of accident at one point in their life. You may have heard that one of the most common injuries suffered in traffic mishaps is whiplash, but you may not understand exactly what whiplash is.

In this blog we will discuss all you need to know about this common ailment, to help you determine both if you have whiplash, and what you can do to treat it safely and effectively.

What is Whiplash?

Whiplash is a neck injury which is caused by a rapid, forceful back-and-forth movement of the neck. It’s name is derived from the fact that the movement resembles the cracking of a whip. This motion can cause injury in multiple areas, including the bones in the spine, the disks located between the bones, as well as ligaments, muscles, tissues and nerves of the neck.

This condition typically occurs when the patient is involved in a rear-end traffic accident.  But an individual can also experience whiplash after a sports injury, such as a football tackle, or other type of trauma, such as a fall. It can also occur if an individual is punched or shaken forcibly.  Most people with whiplash will heal within a few weeks if properly treated, but some experience long-term complications and chronic neck pain.

Is it Whiplash?

Many people do not think they have whiplash if it doesn’t appear immediately after the car accident. However, this condition can manifest days and even weeks after a trauma – although it is most common for symptoms to show up within several days. Signs that you may be experiencing whiplash include neck pain and stiffness, limited range of motion in the neck, headaches which originate at the base of the skull, tingling or loss of feeling in the arms, pain in the shoulder of upper back, pain in the neck which worsens when the neck is moved, fatigue and dizziness.

Less common symptoms may include blurred vision, sleep disturbances, difficulty with focus and concentration, ringing in the ears, irritability, memory issues and depression.

Complications You May Experience

As stated, the majority of people who recognize and treat their whiplash can feel better within a few weeks. Even more importantly, these people also rarely have long-lasting effects or chronic pain stemming from the injury.

However, some individuals do continue to suffer pain and discomfort for months or even years after the trauma took place.  While there is no sure way to know which scenario you will experience, those who endure long-term pain typically had an immediate, intense onset of symptoms including severe neck pain, extremely limited range of motion, and pain that spread to the arms.

Those who were in a high speed car accident are more likely to suffer severe whiplash or complications from the condition. Other risk factors include having had whiplash on a prior occasion or existing low back or neck pain prior to the accident. The older the patient, the more likely they will experience complications as well.

While many will quickly turn to pain medications and at-home exercises and stretches, you may want to consider calling a chiropractor for treatment. Chiropractic techniques will safely and naturally realign your spine and relieve pain. The goal is to heal the source of the pain, not just mask the pain.

If you suspect you may be suffering from whiplash, call the professionals at West Coast Wellness today.

Signs that You Should See a Chiropractor

Whether we experienced a car accident years ago – or are simply growing older – many of us have aches and pains that we have learned to live with. We groan, and stretch, and maybe even take a few ibuprofen – but the good news is, many of the uncomfortable conditions we have accepted can be treated and alleviated with chiropractic care.

If you are ready to gain back your range of motion and be pain free, consider seeing a doctor of chiropractic if you are suffering from any of these common ailments.

1. Lower Back Pain: This is a classic reason many people visit a chiropractor. By manipulating the sacroiliac joint, which links the lower spine to the pelvis, chiropractors can often provide rapid relief for lower back pain.

2. Pain During Pregnancy: Feeling achy is fairly common during pregnancy, as the pelvis is being strained and can be pushed out of alignment. This can cause sciatica and lower back pain, adding to the discomfort of the pregnant woman. Chiropractors are sought after for relief because pregnant women are limited in treatment options for pain. Pain medication or invasive procedures may harm the fetus, while chiropractic methods are completely safe for baby and mother. While studies are sparse, there are indications – and much anecdotal evidence – that chiropractic care throughout pregnancy can significantly lessen back pain during labor.

3. Digestive Problems

Many people are surprised the first time they learn that every major system of the body is connected and linked to a region of the spine. That is, a herniation or bulging of discs in the spine may actually be the cause of problems with your digestion.Chiropractic adjustments relieve the swelling, inflammation and pressure of nerves, allowing the entire body to function more efficiently. When it comes to digestive problems, your chiropractor will concentrate on the nerves in the thoracic (chest and abdominal) region of the spine. Herniated discs in this region have been linked with abdominal pain and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS); but treatment may also relieve heartburn, bloating and gas.  Keeping the nerves of the thoracic spine free from interference is a powerful way to achieve optimal digestive healing and function.

4. Neck Pain

Spinal manipulations are one of the most common treatments for neck pain. And although some patients report that they can achieve similar results by exercising at home, the chiropractor offers additional health benefits. For instance, movement assessments are often performed to see if the origin of the pain is actually a neck injury, or if the pain is radiating from the shoulders. Addressing the true cause of the pain will more quickly ease symptoms and provide relief, not to mention restore range of motion and quality of life.

5. Ongoing Headaches

Headaches have a myriad of causes, and chiropractors can’t help with all of them. However, if your headache is stemming from the neck or upper back, give your chiropractor a call.  Manipulation coupled with massage techniques can loosen muscles and relieve the headache, If you suffer from chronic headaches, visit a chiropractor for a spinal adjustment. They will be able to identify if your headaches have an origin along the spinal column.

Chiropractic care is a strategic way to combat many of life’s aches and pains. So whether you have been suffering for years, or a recent car accident has caused your symptoms to flare up, call West Coast Wellness for an appointment today. Don’t live in pain a minute longer than necessary. We can help.

Car Accidents and Back Injuries

The back consists of muscles, bones, and tissues connected to the spinal cord, extending from your neck down to your pelvic bones. Injuries to the back are common and can result from trauma, or everyday, repetitive behavior.

The lower back is most often damaged, whether from sprains, strains, herniated discs, or fractures. Back injuries limit your range of motion and can cause excruciating pain. Some home remedies can help with back pain, such as OTC pain relief, ice or cold compresses, bed rest, and physician-recommended exercises.

However, one of the major contributors to back injury statistics is car accidents.

Injury Due to Car Accident

Back injuries are common after a car accident, although they are sometimes difficult to link to the incident. Your insurance company must recognize the injury as a result of the accident so that your medical expenses are covered now and into the future. The burden of proof is on you to provide adequate evidence regarding the seriousness of your back injury, as well as how and when it happened.

Unfortunately, insurance companies often look for ways to justify paying you as little as possible. Because of this, they may try to claim that your back injury was pre-existing; that is, that the accident was not actually the cause of your pain. If they can prove that the back injury was not a result of the accident, they do not have to pay for expenses and treatment. Therefore providing the necessary documentation from a medical professional is an important part of a successful claim,

However, there is a situation in which you can receive compensation even if you had a pre-existing back condition. If your condition was worsened or aggravated by the accident, the insurance company should pay your medical or chiropractic costs. Again, the burden is on you to show that the accident caused increased pain or worsening symptoms.

Hint: If you were examined by on-scene paramedics or brought into the hospital for an initial consultation, ask for and keep all records and notes. Visit a chiropractor as soon as possible after the accident. Any damage to your spine or spinal column can be documented for a later claim or even lawsuit.

If you are a patient at a chiropractic clinic for regular treatments, the records will help you to establish the condition of your back prior to the accident. Your chiropractor can then provide the insurance company with the documentation they need to prove the new injuries caused by the accident.

Common back injuries associated with car accidents include:

Whiplash – Although most often considered a neck injury, the cervical spine (the uppermost part of the spine) is also often significantly affected by a case of whiplash.

Spinal Cord Injury – When the spinal cord is damaged, numerous symptoms may manifest. These symptoms may include nerve damage, muscle weakness, numbness, breathing issues, paralysis, and bodily function control loss.

Herniated discs – Discs act as cushions between the spinal vertebrae. When the back is healthy, these cushions prohibit the bones from rubbing against each other. When the protective discs are moved or torn, they become herniated – causing spinal nerve damage.

At West Coast Wellness, we specialize in helping people recover from car accident injuries, whether to the back, neck, or spine. Our team of medical professionals utilizes the latest in chiropractic technique to holistically and naturally treat your back injury, no matter the cause.

Call us today, and begin the road back to a life without pain.

Insurance Issues After a Car Accident

If you have been in a car accident, you will quickly find yourself dealing with the insurance companies on two fronts. On the one hand, you will need to determine the extent of the damage to your car, how much will be covered, and if you need to pursue the other driver for damages. You will also need to assess how your medical expenses will be covered on the medical insurance side. This is especially true if you were involved in a severe accident with long-term implications for your health.

Your insurance company designates an insurance adjuster. This person typically is the single most influential in determining how much you will be reimbursed. Insurance adjusters may interview the parties to the accident, review police reports, or evaluate doctor’s reports and prognoses.

What a Property Insurance Adjuster Considers

Adjusters assess the extent of damage done to your automobile and make a final determination as to the total amount the insurance company will remit. An adjuster may inspect the vehicle(s) personally or accept the repair estimates from an approved auto body shop.

  • If you obtain a repair estimate from an auto body shop, ask your insurance company if they have certified or approved shops. Get at least two repair estimates to ensure accuracy, and if you can obtain 3 or 4, all the better.
  • After evaluating the estimates, the insurance adjuster will make a settlement offer. You have the right to accept or deny the offer.
  • Although insurance companies have different policies, your car will be considered a complete loss or “totaled” if it will require more than 50% of its market value to repair the vehicle.

Insurance Considerations

Does your auto or health insurance cover accidents sustained in a car accident?

Auto Insurance: In the broadest sense, the person determined to be at fault for the accident is expected to pay for the medical expenses of those injured in the accident. However, Florida is a no-fault state, meaning that it is up to each person’s insurance company to pay for their injuries.

Yet, these limits are often reached quickly, and then the injured party can pursue additional payment through the other person’s car insurance company.

In Florida, the personal injury protection (PIP) coverage each motorist must carry can be used to cover their own injuries. In some cases, they can also invoke this coverage to make up for lost wages and even funeral expenses. If your PIP insurance exhausts, your health insurance begins to kick in at that point.

As with any medical situation, your copayments and deductibles will apply when using health insurance. You may also use monies from your health savings account.

Neither Medicare nor Medicaid can be used as primary coverage for car accidents., although you can designate these plans for secondary coverage. You may then use it when you exceed the limits of your personal injury protection coverage if needed.

Chiropractic Care After a Car Accident

Most health care coverage now covers chiropractic treatment after a car accident. This type of therapy is especially effective after the trauma of an impact. It realigns the spine, relieves pressure along the spinal column (including nerves, discs, and vertebrae), and encourages whole-body health.

If you were involved in a car accident or other traumatic accident in the North Port area, call West Coast Wellness as soon as possible. We are here to help.

Florida Car Accident Statistics That Will Shock You

Any Florida lawyer will tell you – car accidents are among the most frequent personal injury cases they see. That is because auto accidents are so prolific and common, especially in a state as populous as ours. Add to the typical hazards of driving the fact that we have so many tourists who are not familiar with the roads, and you have a perfect storm of dangerous roads. In fact, I-4 and I-75 are among the most dangerous highways in the country.

Motor vehicle accidents comprise a significant amount of injury claims in Florida annually. It only stands to reason that with so many accidents, many medical conditions and injuries need treatment.

What Do the Numbers Say?

There is an average of just over 1,100 car accidents every day in Florida – with a total of 403, 626 accidents occurring annually. (Source: Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles FLHSMV)

Approximately 256,000 of those accidents result in injuries, 19,000 of which are severe. These injuries are incapacitating in nature and require more in-depth care than alignment or spinal manipulation.

That leaves approximately 237,000 accidents per year in Florida, which cause injuries of varying degrees that the accident victim will need to treat and hopefully overcome. Across the United States, that number is 2.35 million injured annually.

Types of Accidents

  • 58 percent of police-reported car accidents involved only one vehicle.
  • 38 percent of car accidents resulted from a collision with another vehicle.
  • 40 percent of car accidents involved hitting a fixed object such as a tree or street sign -or a rollover accident.
  • Most car accidents occur June through September.
  • 48 percent of all accidents took place after dark.

Additional Car Accident Facts

  • Although there are more women drivers on the road, approximately 80% of car accidents involve male drivers.
  • Passenger cars are the leading type of vehicle involved in these crashes at 40%, with light trucks (such as vans and pickups) comprising 38% of our roads’ accidents.
  • The most frequent causes of these accidents are drunk driving (32%), speeding (31%), distracted driving (16%), and bad weather (11%).

Most Common Car Accident Injuries

The most common injuries caused by Florida car accidents are :

Whiplash: Results in neck pain and stiffness, loss of range of motion, or worsening pain with movement.

Concussions: Symptoms of a concussion may include headache, pressure, temporary loss of consciousness, feeling dizzy, or ringing in the ears. Concussions can occur without the head actually making contact with any surface, and symptoms may take a few hours to appear. Concussions can cause significant health issues, so you may want to seek treatment if you’re having difficulty concentrating or focusing.

Bone Fractures: Broken bones are the result of the blunt force of the crash. Any bone can break in a car accident, but the most common fractures are the hands, arms, feet, and legs. Symptoms of broken or fractured bones include bruising, swelling, severe pain, deformity, or loss of function.

Musculoskeletal Injuries: These injuries occur when muscles, ligaments, tendons or nerves are stretched, compressed or bent during an accident. Severe cases can be just as painful as a broken bone and can adversely affect movement and function. Soft tissue damage is a possibility.

Car accidents affect people from all demographics, and you most likely have been in an accident at some point in your life. If you or a loved one have suffered an injury due to a car accident and seek relief from pain, call the doctors at West Coast Wellness. Our gentle techniques and approach to holistic health can help put you on the road to recovery.

Causes of Neck and Back Pain

As chiropractors, we see a lot of people in pain. Many times this neck and back pain is the result of a sudden trauma such as a car accident or slip and fall. However, there are also millions of people who suffer from chronic pain which has built up over months or years – typically caused by mundane daily tasks and bad habits.

Neck and back pain can be dull or achy, causing only mild inconvenience. But you may also experience acute, severe pain which restricts mobility and affects your quality of life.

Causes of Neck and Back Pain

Pain which is a result of an accident is easy to diagnose. The exact origin of most back and neck pain can be difficult to pinpoint, however, and may include one of more of the following:

* Overuse or strain, such as heavy lifting or strenuous exercise.
* Repetitive poor posture, such as sitting at a computer every day
* Obesity, as increased weight will put pressure on the spine, discs and vertebrae
* Poor muscle tone, which prevents muscles from holding the spine and vertebrae in
  proper place
* Muscle tension, spasms, sprains or strains
* Degeneration of vertebrae, often a result of aging
* Infections or abdominal problems
* Tears in the muscles or ligaments
* Arthritis, osteoporosis  and other similar conditions
* Protruding or slipped disks, or pinched nerves

What You May Experience

Pain in your back may be localized, or seem to affect a large portion of your body. In addition to this identifiable pain, you may also experience leg numbness or tingling in proximity to the knee; stiffness along your spine; or sharp pain that radiates from your lower back down the back of  your leg and into your calf and toes.

Important: If you are suffering from loss of bladder and bowel control, or weakness in both legs simultaneously – please seek help right away. These may indicate a serious medical condition.

Sharp pain or dull aches in your neck might be accompanied by arm numbness or tingling, headaches, or shoulder pain

Treating the Pain

Acute back or neck pain may improve with rest and over the counter medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Individuals should move slowly and carefully while their bodies helm with no rapid or jerking movements which could cause a further loss of mobility. Chronic neck or back pain may be successfully treated with a variety of methods.

A chiropractic regimen is considered to be an effective way to ease many types of neck and back pain, as it addresses the source of the problem – not the symptom. If spinal alignment or slipped disks are causing the issues, adjustments are likely to not only stop your immediate pain, but prevent it from recurring.

It is always recommended that you visit a chiropractor or medical professional before you embark on any treatment plan, as you could do more harm than good if there is a serious problem. In addition to adjustments and alignments, the following may work for your pain:

*  Hot or cold packs
*  Exercises to strengthen muscles and alleviate pain (ie  stretching/ flexing of muscles). *  Aerobic exercise to help with overall fitness and strength
* Braces or corsets
* Acupuncture

Preventing Pain from Everyday Activities

Keeping the pain from occurring at all is the most preferable course of action. To proactively protect your neck and back:

* Learn proper lifting techniques: avoid heavy lifting; bend your legs, maintain a straight back; slowly lift your body and the object.

* Be aware of posture when sitting, standing, or lying down. Consider specialized head or body pillows to help ease pressure on the spine while sleeping.

* Exercise regularly, incorporating strength exercises for your back. Strong back muscles help to support your spine. Exercises which strengthen the core and improve balance are also important.

* Establish ergonomic designs for your computer height, keyboard, chair and phone usage.

* Adopt a healthy lifestyle. Maintain a healthy weight, minimize emotional stress, quit smoking, and incorporate Vitamin D and calcium in particular into your diet.

What Is Scar Tissue?

Scar tissue forms in our bodies when there has been an injury, and cells are destroyed. Scarring is a part of the body’s natural healing process, which can occur either on the skin’s surface or internally. The body rushes new cells to the site of the injury to replace the dead or damaged cells. Scar tissue acts as a protective barrier around the injured area, but it does not have the elasticity of normal tissue. When on the skin’s surface, it can cause cosmetic issues. But inside the body, scar tissue growth forms adhesions and fibrosis, which could cause medical issues.

Healthy fibrous connective tissue is made mainly of collagen, and it supports the body’s structural integrity. This tissue also contains fibroblasts, which are the cells that form the collagen, as well as carbohydrates and water. Although scars are also made up of fibrous connective tissue, researchers have discovered that it differs slightly in arrangement from normal skin.

What Causes Scar Tissue to Form Internally?

When trauma occurs in the body, it can cause fibrous bands or sheets to form. Also known as adhesions, these bands grow as a reaction to inflammation and can begin to grow between and join parts of the body. Fibrosis is another variation of scar tissue and consists of the excess buildup of fibrous connective tissue. Scar tissue may grow with no known reason for its origination but is often in response to surgery, infection, or severe injury.

Scar tissue often appears in organs such as in the lungs (pulmonary fibrosis) or the heart, which may be the result of a heart attack. Cirrhosis of the liver is a familiar example of normal tissue death being replaced by scar tissue due to abuse or infection. In the case of a back injury, scar tissue often forms and can inhibit movement, cause pain, and disrupt the correct functioning of the nervous system.

Side Effects

Adhesions may not have symptoms, but in the case of a back injury, the patient will often experience decreased movement or pain. Although adhesions may be removed surgically, this can also cause more scar tissue to form.

With back injuries specifically, scar tissue can form at the nerve root. While scar tissue doesn’t typically cause any pain directly, it can bind nerve roots together, or throw off the alignment of components of the spine – both of which can cause painful leg, neck or back pain.

Chiropractic Care for Scar Tissue Relief

Scar tissue in the body needs to undergo a process of remodeling, or a stretching of the tissue to realign the collagen fibers. Not only does alignment take place, but the scar tissue is strengthened to protect the body more competently.

The collagen alignment process will help the patient to maximize flexibility and increase mobility. Chiropractors utilize different methods to accomplish this goal non-surgically.

  • Soft tissue manipulation typically involves utilizing a hand-held device to stimulate and stretch damaged tissues. This method can relieve inflammation and pain at the source.
  • Kinesiology therapeutic tape can stretch scar tissue by lifting the skin and decreasing the pressure to the underlying tissue. This will help to alleviate inflammation as well as aid in the remodeling process.
  • Massage therapy may help with remodeling by encouraging weak muscles to regain mobility, strength, and flexibility.

Your Nervous System & Chiropractic Care

After a car accident, you may not feel that you have any injuries worth of medical treatment. In fact, you may feel fine at first, with seemingly no adverse effects at all. Unfortunately, your neck or back can begin to cause pain or discomfort weeks or even months later.

If you are like many people, you may live with nagging symptoms for years, assuming that they aren’t that serious or that treatment won’t help. You may not even associate your specific symptoms with the accident. But when the discomfort begins to interfere with daily life, it is time to do something about it. You’ve likely heard that chiropractic care is the right solution for your neck and back pain, but how exactly does chiropractic work?

Here is an explanation of how the nervous system works and how chiropractors treat nerve dysfunction, including that which is the result of a car accident.

Nervous System Explained

There are three parts to the nervous system.

The central nervous system is comprised of the brain and spinal cord and is considered to be the primary processing function of the nervous system. The spinal cord transmits information to the brain for processing via multiple pathways, then returns relevant data to the extremities. A simple example of the central nervous system at work is walking. Our brain tells our legs to move, and our legs move accordingly, while keeping your balance. The sensory-motor pathways are vital for completing everyday tasks, even as we are not aware of their activity.

The peripheral nervous system is made up of a similar “two-way street” system. Information is sent from feet, hands, arms, legs, fingers, and toes to the spinal cord, transmitting information back and forth.

The autonomic nervous system is in charge of our organ functions, such as breathing, heart rate, and digestion, among others.

All three systems are in constant communication with one another to keep our body functioning normally. However, many conditions can disrupt that communication, including spinal cord trauma and nerve or brain damage.

Subluxation Complex

The “subluxation complex”  describes a compromised nerve transmission, which can be the result of a compressed or irritated nerve. This nerve damage is typically due to an incorrect bone or joint position somewhere along the nerve’s course. Minimizing or eliminating nerve compression will facilitate the restoration of information transmission over the pathways, subsequently restoring function.

For instance, a patient may be experiencing numbness in their hand and fingers. A chiropractor determines that the patient has a herniated disk in their neck, and by alleviating the pinched nerve, he can relieve the numbness.  Chiropractors may utilize spinal manipulation, mobilization, or exercises to treat the situation. Depending on your provider, they may also employ lasers, electric stimulation, or pulsed magnetic field technologies. These treatments achieve the desired results with minimal side effects or risk to the patient. Because of these benefits, many people choose to try chiropractic before any more invasive forms of treatment.

At West Coast Wellness, we recommend that you schedule an appointment with us immediately following an accident. By doing so, we can align the spine and avoid the emergence of uncomfortable symptoms at all. However, if you are experiencing any strange numbness, tingling, pain, or loss of mobility, it is not too late to give us a call. We will work with you to naturally heal your body and return your nervous system to peak operating condition.

The 5 Real Benefits of Chiropractic Care

A chiropractor will align your spine, relieve stress and pressure, and fix the source of your pain and inflammation rather than mask the symptoms.

But as you regain strength and health through chiropractic treatments, your body is benefitting in many other ways you may not realize. A properly functioning nervous system is necessary for true holistic health – not only to relieve pain and discomfort but to live your best life. Here are some of the many ways that you can expect your body to react to chiropractic treatment positively.

Stress Relief

Ongoing stress results in muscle tension, but chronic stress can do severe damage to your nervous system. A malfunctioning nervous system will significantly affect muscles, causing the body to begin to break down. Mental conditions may even manifest.

Chiropractic adjustments will restore your body to a balanced state, reduce tension, and encourage relaxation. The enhanced state of relaxation will positively influence the brain and increase your ability to manage stress.

Restoring Posture

Sitting incorrectly and for long periods exerts significant pressure on the spine. This pressure will begin to curve or tilt the spine and cause undue stress on the neck. Chiropractic adjustments can restore correct posture and eliminate pain. Interestingly, it does not matter if you are old, young, or anywhere in between. Everyone can benefit from the realignment of the spine to relieve pressure and restore good posture.

Improved Immune System

During this COVID-19 crisis, the need to build up individual immunity has been in the spotlight. You may not realize the chiropractic adjustments can actually improve and support your immune system.

Misaligned vertebrae cause more medical problems than you can even imagine. They block the effective performance of the nervous system, which is essential for relaying messages from the brain to every other part of the body – including immune cells. When the body cannot send information effectively, it begins to malfunction and get sick. A healthy nervous system – by virtue of a properly aligned spine – results in vastly better health overall.

Better Sleep

Quality sleep is one of the most critical components of a healthy lifestyle. However, many people suffer from lack of sleep due to stress, insomnia, or too much work. Many of these people also experience serious aches, pains, and sore muscles. While patients can visit a physician for a pharmaceutical solution, the results are fake and temporary. A chiropractor can offer long-lasting solutions, which will result in deep, restful sleep, relieving tense muscles, and putting the body back to right. Once restful sleep is restored, this positively affects all other aspects of life.

Stay Chemically Balanced

Our hectic lives can cause our bodies to be out of whack – lack of sleep, poor diet, and excessive stress can wreak havoc on the body’s chemical balance. The body operates most efficiently at a precise balance, and when the balance is upended. The body reacts. People who suffer from chemical imbalances may experience chronic fatigue and mood swings, which can ultimately disrupt one’s life. When the spine is aligned correctly, and the brain and body are effectively communicating, balance is restored across the entire system. This is why people with ADD and depression see significant positive results in chiropractic treatments.

Clearly, chiropractic treatments offer benefits beyond fixing a sore back. It is not uncommon for a patient who comes in for treatment after a car accident will continue long after the back is realigned – because they feel so healthy and robust in every area of life.
